Designation Japanese GovernmentEhistoric site
Time The early to middle Jomon period
Briefing This site is located north of the Kamegaoka site, sitting on the hill of about 20 meters above sea level facing the Kamegaoka over the valley.
Many shell mounds are seen on the Pacific coasts, but the Togoyano is important as one of a few mounds on the coasts along with the Sea of Japan.
Excavated at the site were pit-dwellings in the early Jomon and many bones of fish, birds and animals centering on shellfish like corbicula japonica and unionidae fleming, bringing us the precious information on the eating habits, hunting and fishing activities in that period.
About 60 Benkei clam (glycymeris@albolineata ) were excavated. Bracelets were made out of Benkei clams at the site and they are considered to have been brought not only to the other places in Aomori Prefecture but also to the Hokkaido Island.
